Trendy Crunch Fitness now offers Ruff Yoga classes for dogs. According to Director Suze Teitelman, it's only natural since many yoga positions were inspired by animals in the first place. Introduced in Manhattan, the program has expanded to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Miami.

A sable coat consists of black-tipped hairs overlaid on a different-colored background. Sable coats come in many colors, including gray-sable, silver-sable, and gold-sable. A brindle coat is also highlighted by dark-tipped hairs, but in this case the hairs form a pattern of irregular striped. Collies and Shelties often have sable coats, Boxers and French Bulldogs are often brindled.

Most American presidents have been dog owners, and some have owned several. George Washington owned at least 11 hounds, though they lived in a kennel rather than the president's house. Later, dogs moved into the White House itself. Theodore Roosevelt had three dogs, Herbert Hoover had eight, and FDR had seven. Calvin Coolidge holds the record at a dozen dogs.

Even one of the more than 30,000 quills in a porcupine's body can cause a dog great pain. If your pooch has tussled with a porcupine, keep him as still as possible while you take him to a vet. The vet will use an anesthetic and carefully remove every quill. If even one quill is missed, it can work its way deeper into the body, causing further injury.

The Shiloh Shepherd was created in the 1970s by an American breeder in search of an old-style, very large shepherd dog with a more mellow temperament than the modern German Shepherd. The breeds are otherwise remarkably similar.

Chasing cars, chewing furniture, barking excessively and digging holes - each of these misdemeanors is likely to be the result of boredom. Prevent canine crime before it happens by channeling your dog's energy into exercise. There's no better way to keep your juvenile delinquent healthy, trim, and out of the doghouse.

Their coats are usually dense gray or salt-and-pepper colored.

The ancient Romans valued dogs very highly, using them for warfare, hunting, as pets, and as watchdogs. Owning a dog was considered a status symbol, since only the moneyed classes could afford to keep guard dogs. Poorer folk had to make do with cackling geese.

While wolves and other ancestors of the dog are generally classified as carnivores (meat eaters), today's domestic dogs are neither herbivores (plant eaters), or carnivores. Rather, they are classified as omnivores, which means they will eat everything...and usually, they do!

The physical benefits of exercise for your dog - muscle tone, flexibility, good digestion, and cardiovascular fitness - are only part of the story. Exercise also stimulates production of endorphins, brain chemicals that actually foster feelings of well-being and relaxation. And this also holds true for humans.

America has no royal family, but we do have plenty of blue-blooded pooches. The first Scottish Terrier registered by the AKC was named Prince Charlie, the first German Shepherd was Queen of Switzerland, and the first Briard was Dauphine de Montjoye. Looking eastward, the club welcomed its first Lhasa Apso, Empress of Kokonor.

Trainers agree that one of the most common mistakes owners make is failing to train their dogs proactively. They encourage owners to put their efforts into teaching a dog what he should do rather than punishing or correcting a dog for what he has done wrong.

The mighty Rottweiler is usually considered a German native, but historians now believe that the breed actually has a more southern origin. They suggest that Rottweil, the German city for which the breed was named, was actually the "end of the line" for cattle drovers from Rome who, along with their dogs, followed the Roman army on marches throughout Europe.

IF A TAIL WAGS IN THE FOREST...

The primary function of a dog's tail is communication with other living creatures. That's why dogs don't generally wag their tails when they are alone. A dog will probably wag his tail at you if he sees you put food in his bowl, but if the same dog enters a room alone and a bowl full of food is already there, he won't wag his tail at it.

If your dog's sleeping quarters smell like they belong to a farm or junkyard dog, rather than a house pet, try adding baking soda to your usual detergent the next time you wash the bedding. Baking soda absorbs odors and discourages bacterial growth. Use cold water, as hot water can set odors.

Your dog is naturally beautiful, so be sure to keep makeup out of her reach. Many cosmetic products contain harmful alcohol; nail polish and polish remover contain poisonous acetone; anti-acne products and soaps contain benzoyl or hydrogen peroxide, both of which are toxic to dogs if ingested; and some cosmetics use formaldehyde as a preservative.

It is quite common for dogs to experience excess gas, but there are some ways to clear the air, as it were. Try walking your dog soon after meals. Check the soy content in his food - although it is a good source of protein, too much soy can cause gas. You could also add an enzyme supplement (such as CurTail drops) to his food to aid in digestion.

The little-known Brussels Griffon breed comes from 15th century Belgium. The first Griffons were used to control rodents and were somewhat larger than the breed standard of today. Intelligent, loyal, and assertive, this is a toy breed born to be spoiled. There are two coat types, rough and smooth, the latter influenced by the breeding of English Pugs into the line.
